We announced upcoming automation of shutting down instances with no valid record of person responsible for the instance. You can find more information on this topic on the responsibility page.

The promised integration of our old (OSv1) data-node into OSv2 has been finalized today. Now there is an additional value of 40TB SAS disk based volume space available. After a small period of testing we would recomment to migrate existing volumes to the 40TB data node and only keep volumes on the SSD data node if it is really necessary. Anyway measures do not show a huge loss in performance, when using the SAS data node. The massive increase in volume space made it possible to raise default quotas for team-project-spaces up to 1 TB and for all other types of project spaces up to 500 GB. For special cases you can now request up to 4 TB of space for a single volume.

The old OpenStack cluster finally has been shut down today. As a direct effect we got a load of new free Floating IP addresses. So we decided to increase the default quota for all team project spaces to 10.

Improvements of new OpenStack V2 over old OpenStack

  • New Hardware
    • Stronger CPUs, more cores (nearly doubled)
    • More and faster RAM (more than double capacity)
    • All Flash SSD Storage on Compute and Data Nodes
    • 2 x 10 Gbit + 2 x 1 Gbit Fallback Network connection between all Nodes
    • Redundant Switch Configuration (no interruption when one fails)
    • Redundant Controller Node Configuration (no interruption when one fails)
    • Redundant Network Node Configuration (no interruption when one fails)
  • New Features (and other improvements)
    • Clean installation via openstack-ansible
    • No more dirty hacks and customizations (with no trace)
    • Improved Dashboard structure (ok, old users may say more complicated structure)
    • DNS entries for Floating IPs now can be managed via Dashboard in detail
    • Heat Orchestration Tool can be used to create Clusters of VMs at once
    • Server Groups can be setup in order to control wether VMs are run on the same Compute Server or not
    • VMs can now safely be run volume only
    • Live Migration is now possible (if the VM is running volume only)
    • OpenStack Dashboard now has propper secure access (https)
    • All offered VM configurations (flavors) now have their VCPUs doubled
    • All offered VM configurations (flavors) now have their RAM quadrupled
    • No more MTU Problems (VMs now have standard MTU)
    • Disk access from within VM can be up to 1 Giga Byte per second (up to 10 times higher, both local and volume disk)
    • Network Speed VM to VM up to 10 Gbit/s (10 times higher)
    • Network Speed VM to Internet up to 10 Gbit/s (10 times higher)
